The AI SDR Bubble Just Popped.
Here's What Replaces It…
Check out linkedin go-to-market posts right now and you'll see the same crap over and over in your feed.
It’s flooded with these AI workflows that are going to book you meetings using Claude or some other form of duct tape AI monstrosity.
In theory the tech SHOULD be able to do it, right?
The problem is super obvious once you actually start any outreach campaign.
Nuance.
And AI doesn't have it.
It can fake it for about three lines of an email before something feels off.
A reference that's almost right.
A compliment that's slightly too generic.
A "I noticed you posted about X" (when really you posted about X six months ago and have moved on three times since).
Buyers can smell it now. They've been getting hit with this stuff for two years. The trick is up.
But here's where most people overcorrect.
They go from "AI can do everything" to "AI can do nothing" and decide outbound has to be 100% manual again.
Spending 20 minutes researching every prospect.
Writing every email from scratch.
Burning their week on tasks that have no business being done by a human.
That's the wrong reaction.
The real play is figuring out what AI is genuinely great at, what it's genuinely terrible at, and stitching the two together so each part of the campaign is being done by whoever does it best.
Let me break it down…
What AI is actually great at in an outreach campaign:
There are parts of outbound where AI flat-out wins. Faster, cheaper, and honestly better than most humans doing it manually.
Research at scale. Pulling recent posts, hiring signals, funding events, podcast appearances, tech stack changes, headcount growth. A human doing this for 200 prospects a week is wasting their life. AI handles it in minutes.
List building. This used to be the worst part of any campaign. Sitting in Sales Nav, applying 14 filters, exporting, cleaning, deduping. Now you describe who you want in plain English and the list builds itself.
List cleaning and verification. Bad emails kill domains. Bad data kills reply rates. AI catches both before it gets sent.
Draft generation. Once you've decided the angle and the offer, AI can produce a first-pass draft in seconds. It won't always be the final version. But it gets you 70% of the way there, which is the slowest 70% if you're writing from a blank page. And it gets you 100% of the way there with more advanced prompting (the data is very clear on this).
Pattern detection across replies. When you've sent 500 messages and gotten 40 replies, AI can sort them by intent, surface objections, and tell you which angle is landing. That used to require a sales ops person and a spreadsheet.
That's a lot of value. If you're not using AI for any of this, you're operating with one hand tied behind your back.
What AI is genuinely terrible at:
Picking the right ICP. AI can build the list. It cannot decide who should be on it. That decision requires market context, founder instinct, and an understanding of which segments are actually in pain right now. A model trained six months ago doesn't know your market shifted last week.
Designing the offer. What you put in front of the prospect on the first touch is the single most important decision in the campaign. AI can't design this. It will give you a generic "book a 15 minute call" offer every single time unless you tell it otherwise. The offer is a strategic call, not a generation task.
The reply. The moment a prospect responds, the conversation enters a phase where every sentence matters. Tone, timing, what to push on, what to let go. This is where deals are made and lost. Letting AI handle replies is how you end up in those screenshot-and-mock threads.
The blend that actually works…
The teams getting real results in 2026 are running campaigns that look like this:
A human picks the ICP. They know the market, they know the pain, they know which segment is ready to buy.
A human designs the offer. Something genuinely useful that the prospect would say yes to without effort. A short video. A custom audit. A specific insight. Not "hop on a call."
AI builds the list. Pulls the research. Cleans the data. Generates the first-pass drafts based on the angle the human already decided on.
A human reviews and tightens the drafts. Cuts the AI-sounding lines. Adds the one specific detail that makes it land. Approves the send.
AI handles the sending logistics. Inbox rotation, timing, deliverability monitoring.
A human handles every reply. Reads the tone. Decides the next move.
That's the blend.
It's not "AI does it all" and it's not "do everything by hand." It's using each one for what they're actually good at.
The result is a campaign that moves at AI speed on the parts that should move fast, and at human speed on the parts that need to be right.
This is exactly why we built GTM Bud.
Most outreach tools force you into one of two camps.
Either you're using a fully automated AI SDR that takes the whole job off your plate (and crashes your domain in the process). Or you're cobbling together six different tools to do the parts manually, with AI bolted on as an afterthought.
Neither of those works.
GTM Bud was designed from the start around the blend we just walked through. The AI handles the parts AI is great at. The human stays in control of the parts that need judgment. And both of those things live in one place instead of being scattered across a stack of half-connected tools.
You describe your ideal prospect in plain English. The AI builds the list, pulls the research, cleans the data, and drafts the messages.
You stay in control of the offer, the angle, the ICP, and the reply.
The result is outreach that actually feels like outreach. Not spam, not robot, not duct tape. A real campaign, run faster than you could run it alone, but with your fingerprints on the parts that matter.
The big unlock for me was realizing the need to:
-Use AI where it's a force multiplier.
-Keep humans where judgment matters.
-Run them in the same workflow.
Then send the message.
Rooting for you,
Tom
