You're answering one question before they even ask it: "Why me? Why now?"
And the only way to consistently nail that is targeting.
If your list is tight, relevance comes naturally. If you're spraying messages to anyone with a pulse and a title, no amount of personalization will save you.
Relevance starts with the list, not the copy.
Now, number two: the offer.
Once they feel like the message was meant for them, the next question is: "Is this worth my time?"
That's where your offer does the heavy lifting.
And I don't mean your service. I mean what you're putting on the table in that first touch.
A short video with a few ideas specific to their situation.
A quick audit.
A resource that solves a small piece of the puzzle they're working on right now.
Something they can say yes to without risk.
If your relevance earns the read, your offer earns the reply.
Most teams obsess over copy tweaks and sequencing when the real leverage is in these two things.
Get the targeting right so your message feels relevant from the jump. Then lead with something genuinely useful.
